Texas Student Wielding Ax Is Shot Dead

 http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/12/14/us/texas-student-wielding-ax-is-shot-dead.html

A University of North Texas student holding an ax was fatally shot on Sunday by a campus police officer who was responding to a call about a man knocking out car windows.

This is crazy to think about. He came at the officer with the ax in hand. Who does that?  He should have know that you are going to get shot for doing something stupid like that.

Quote of the week

I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn.

There is never going to be a day that I don’t learn sothing new. So this quote is meaningful to me because you never will stop learning. Might as well get used to it.

Observations

This week I observed those Sumter high kids who came to the school just to make trouble. I don’t really see the point in them coming to the school but I’m happy that nothing bad happened to anyone.

I’m going to take away from this that school rivalries are serious but not that serious. It should stay on the fields but not come to the schools.

Reflections

Let’s just take a moment and thank God that this is the last blog……. Yes! I’m so happy. I’ve been up to my nose in stuff for this week. Im glad that this is the last week before break!

Teaching the Common Core in China

 http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/11/01/education/edlife/teaching-the-common-core-in-china.html

Chinese parents are trying to make sure that they’re children will be ready for the tests that will get them into a good forgiven college.

I like its cool that these parents are so concerned about their children’s education. I don’t know if Common Core is going to help them any but it’s worth a try.

Quote of the Week

A goal without a plan is simply a wish.

This is meaning to me beacuadeni believe you should go into everything with a plan. If you don’t have a plan or anything then you probably won’t do as well as you would hope.

Observations

This week I observed that students are starting to act out because it’s getting close to break. No one is wanting to stay in class or do anything in the classes.

In a class I would just have to remind the students that they are still in class and they are still being graded.

Reflections

I’m overwhelmed with finals coming up in my college classes.

The War on Campus Sexual Assault Goes Digital

 http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/11/15/technology/the-war-on-campus-sexual-assault-goes-digital.html

Sexual assault on college campuses have become an issue for school administrators and federal education regulators. Many students said they have experienced nonconsensual sex but did not report it to school officials or support services. To help students a nonprofit software start-up in San Francisco called Sexual Health Innovations has developed an online reporting system for campus sexual violence. Students at participating colleges can use its site, called Callisto, to record details of an assault anonymously. The site saves and time stamps the post to allow students to decide later whether they want to file reports with their schools.

I like this software set up. It’s great for people to see that they aren’t the only ones and that they have people there to help them. If someone thing like this happened to someone I knew I would want them to go and report it. I understand that it’s scary for people to report these actions because they are scared of the consequences.

Quote of the week

“Do your own thing on your own terms and get what you came here for.”-Oliver James

This quote is meaningful to me because you should never wait for anyone to do what you want to do. Don’t let anyone hold you back from accomplishing your dreams.

Observations

This week I observed that we, as the teacher cadets, were not ready for this test at all. We all waited until last minute to study and then freaked out when handed the test.

I can take away from this that it is not good to wait until last minute to stay for a very big test. In my classes I will encourage kids to study earlier then the day before. It’s not a habit to get into.

Reflections

I’m getting really tired of these blogs. I always forgot about them until late Sunday night. I can’t wait for you to tell us this is that last one!! I’m stressing over these projects. I just feel like I have such simple ideas but I can’t seem to get them into an actual project. I’m just tired.

Princeton Students Hold Sit-In on Racial Injustice

Princeton University announced on Wednesday that it would change the title of those who oversee its residential colleges to “head” from “master. Even with this change made, a previously planned protest proceeded, with about 200 students walking out of classes to draw attention to what they saw as racial injustice.

I think it’s cool that the students have recognized a problem and are trying to do something to help.

Quote of the Week

I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

-Jimmy Dean

I like this saying because it’s saying that you may not be able to control everything but you can control yourself. If you want to go to college but don’t afford it, that’s the wind. You choosing to find a way to pay your way through, is you changing the sails to get to your destination.

Observations

I observed a boy who came into one of my class. He came into class high. He had skipped his 1st block to go with some friends and smoke before coming to class.

I do not want to do this. This is terrible. You’re killing your brain cells and wasting your time even coming to class. If you’re too far gone to even understand what the man is trying to teach, you’re definitely not going to be able to pass the class.

Reflections

I’ve absolutely loved my thanksgiving break. I had family come and stay for a week and it was amazing to finally see them. It’s great to be able to spend time with family on a day that is focused on family.

Everything You Need To Know About The New SAT

The new SAT will soon arrive. The College Board says the admission test will contain “no more mysteries.” This new test debuts  in March, there will be 2 sections instead of 3.

I personally like this new test. It says that it will better correspond with high school curriculum. That’s great! We need a test where we won’t have to be doing guess work because we were never taught the material.

Quote of the week

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass but learning to dance in the rain.

This quote is meaningful to me because you can’t let all the bad stuff in life get you down. Just keep looking at the bright side and find something positive to look at.

Observations

While I was babysitting this weekend I saw that the kids argued with me a lot about there intelligence. They thought they knew a word or something and then I would tell them they were wrong/correct them and then they would argue with me.

I can take this into my teaching by realizing that not all kids are going to know everything. I’m just going to have to teach them what’s right and wrong. I also need to be nice when I tell them they are incorrect about something. I don’t want to discourage them from wanting to learn.

Reflections

I’m happy that the cold weather is coming in. I’ve also realized that I’m behind in all this college stuff. I need to set aside a weekend soon and get on all that stuff.

Nationwide Tests Shows Dip in Students’ Math Abilities

For the first time since 1990 math skills have dropped in American students. The decline appeared in both 4 and 8 grade with a test that is administrated every two years.

I’m not surprised there has been a drop in math skills. Whoever makes up the rules for math keeps changing them. The way I learned how to do something and the way my parents learned how to do it is completely different. I bet the way they are learning it is different from my experience too. Math is never the same and I understand why it might be hard for people to keep up.

Quote of the week

No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path. -Buddha

This quote is meaningful to me because it says that no one is going to be able to help you all your life. You are going to have to do it yourself. I like this because with how soon we are all going to be going off to college we have to realize that we are on your own. We are going to have to “walk the path” ourselves.

Observations

I observed some very rude people while we were on the FMU trip. I held open the door for the other group with us and not a single one of them said thank you.

I do not think that children should be raised to not say thank you and please. They are not going to have everything handed to them on a silver plater. They should give thanks when needed.

Reflections

This week I realized that I do not want to go to FMU. Nothing against it, I just didn’t feel anything special about it. Plus, I really like my house and my parents are letting me stay here for free.

Shaky handoff?: Texas Coach Denies Slipping Ref Post-Game Bribe

People are questioning if a coach bribed a ref after the game ended. The coach denies it. He said that he passed on a lucky poker chip to the ref. There was a video of the handshake posted on Twitter but it has since been deleted.

I really hope this isn’t true. That is really crappy of someone to pay off a ref just for their team to win. The coach obviously didn’t believe enough in his teams ability to win by themselves, if he really did pay the ref off.

Quote of Week

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

This is a meaningful quote because if you give people the answers they’ll be able to pass the class but they won’t really learn anything. If you give people the tools to learn and understand what you are teaching then they can learn for a lifetime.

Observations

(I know this might be confusing but I don’t want to give specific information about it)

This week I observed a girl who had a mental breakdown in the middle of the hall because she thought the worst about something that was going on. Instead of just calming down and thinking it could be something completely different, she thought it was the worst possible thing ever.

I can take this into teaching by realizing just because something bad happens to me or a student, it doesn’t mean I need to freak out and think the worse. It’s probably not that bid of a deal and I’m sure everything will work out just fine.

Reflections

This week was super fun because it was my birthday week! Yay!!! I turned 18 on Friday and I don’t feel any different but it’s still super cool!! 😍 It’s weird being one of the oldest in your grade because you can do things they can’t but you don’t want to do it alone.

Oregon School Suspends 8th-Grader Over Battlefield across T-Shirt

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/10/11/Oregon-school-suspends-8th-grader-in-battlefield-cross-t-shirt/

8th grader Alan Holmes’ was suspended from his school because when he was asked to change his shirt he refused. He was wearing a shirt to support his older brother who served in Iraq. His dad said he was proud of him. Alan said he doesn’t understand why he couldn’t wear it.

I can see both sides to this story. In one hand he should be allowed to support our troops but in the other you’re not allowed to wear anything with guns on it. Just because you think it’s good doesn’t mean someone else sees it as that. I’m proud of the kid of standing up for himself though.

Quote of the week

We can complain because rose bushes have thorns or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.

-Abraham Lincoln

This quote is meaningful to me because I believe that you can either look at the bad side is things or the bright side of things. You can’t just think the worst about everything because something is hard or because it’s not going your way. You have to look at the bright side and see what you can achieve from it in the long run.

Observations

This week I went to Walmart and I was standing in line to check out and the women in front of me was talking on the phone while she was getting rang up. The clerk was trying to talk to her and ask her questions and the woman on the phone just ignored her because obviously her phone conversation was much more important. That is insanely rude. I was raised better than to do that to someone.

I do not agree with this. This is extremely rude to do to anyone. Being ignored is not very nice to do to someone. When it comes to kids, ignoring them could seriously hurt their feelings and then that could hurt you or your job. You just need to be careful what you do when talking to kids.

Reflection

I feel like I’m getting farther and farther behind in all my classes just because I forget what all I have to do. I’m not even going to lie I completely forgot that I had to do this blog until I was on my phone and saw the app.

Epileptic boy, 5, forced to wear trash bag at school, mom says

 http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/09/24/epileptic-boy-5-forced-to-wear-trash-bag-at-school-mom-says/

Epileptic boy was isolated from the rest of the class and had a trash bag over clothes. The teacher said it was to prevent saliva from falling on the boys shirt. Mom says they could have used a bib or something else.

I think this is extremely rude to do to someone, no matter that the condition. They easily could have used a bib or just changed his shirt. This mom has ever right to be mad about what happened. I just don’t understand why they isolated him from the rest of the class.

Quote of the week

“Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.”-Albert Einstein

This quote is meaningful to me because I believe that you should allows be learning. When you are born you instantly start to learn and as you grow you should never stop unless you can no longer live. You never know what you could learn or how you could benefit from learning that one thing.

Observations

This week I observed the mass amount of people who have lost their homes to the floods. It’s a sad thing and I, extremely grateful that me and my family are ok. I don’t think anyone took the warning about this very seriously.

That is what I am going to take from this event. Students may not always take what you are telling them seriously. I need to remember that when it comes to things like this, that everyone understands and knows the possible outcomes. They need to be prepared for the worse. I want all of my students to be safe in times like this.

Reflections

I absolutely hated that game from this week. It made me so mad. Oh my gosh, just thinking about it now is making me mad. I will never play that game again!! NEVER!! I feel like I have a lot on my plate right now and I just don’t know how I’m going to get it all done.
